Developed by ASUS in partnership with Xbox, it also introduces Xbox-style ergonomic grips and the Xbox Full Screen Experience designed specifically for handheld gaming.

Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme Performance
The star of the Ally X is the AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme.
It combines an 8-core/16-thread CPU with Radeon graphics and an NPU capable of up to 50 TOPS of AI performance. ASUS lists the GPU with 12 RDNA 3 Compute Units and up to 8.6 TFLOPS.
The handheld is powerful enough for modern PC games including:
- AAA titles
- Xbox Game Pass games
- Steam games
- Battle.net titles
- Indie games
- Emulation and older PC games
Independent testing found improved gaming performance over the previous Ally generation, particularly at lower resolutions such as 720p, although the upgrade is not transformational in every game.
7-Inch 120Hz Display
The Ally X uses a 7-inch Full HD 1920 × 1080 IPS-level touchscreen.
It supports:
120Hz refresh rate
AMD FreeSync Premium
500-nit brightness
100% sRGB
Gorilla Glass Victus
Gorilla Glass DXC anti-reflection treatment
The 120Hz refresh rate and VRR support are particularly useful because handheld games rarely maintain a perfectly fixed frame rate.
FreeSync Premium
AMD FreeSync Premium synchronizes the screen refresh rate with the game’s frame rate.
This helps reduce:
- Screen tearing
- Stuttering
- Uneven motion
It is one of the Ally X’s biggest display advantages over handhelds without VRR.
24GB LPDDR5X RAM
The Ally X includes 24GB of LPDDR5X-8000 memory.
That is particularly useful because the integrated Radeon GPU shares system memory.
Having 24GB gives Windows, games and the integrated graphics more room than handhelds equipped with only 16GB.
1TB SSD
Storage is another strong point.
The Ally X comes with a 1TB PCIe 4.0 NVMe M.2 2280 SSD.
The standard 2280 form factor also makes future upgrades relatively straightforward.
A UHS-II microSD card reader provides another storage expansion option.
80Wh Battery
The Ally X includes a large 80Wh battery.
Battery life still depends heavily on game complexity, screen brightness and performance mode.
Tom’s Hardware testing suggested around three hours in demanding titles under moderate settings, while lighter games can last significantly longer.
For a high-performance Windows handheld, the 80Wh capacity is one of its biggest advantages.
Xbox Full Screen Experience
One of the most important differences between the Xbox Ally X and older Windows handhelds is the Xbox Full Screen Experience.
It provides a console-style interface designed to minimize the need to interact with the traditional Windows desktop.
Microsoft says the mode also reduces background activity and delays non-essential Windows tasks so more resources can be dedicated to gaming.
Multiple PC Game Stores
Because this is still a full Windows 11 PC, you are not restricted to Xbox games.
The aggregated game library can include supported games from:
- Xbox
- Game Pass
- Steam
- Battle.net
- Other Windows PC stores
This flexibility is a major advantage over traditional closed consoles.
Xbox-Style Controls
ASUS redesigned the chassis around grips inspired by an Xbox Wireless Controller.
Controls include:
ABXY buttons
Xbox button
D-pad
Impulse triggers
Dual analog sticks
Two programmable rear buttons
HD haptics
6-axis motion sensor
Independent testing found the larger controller-style grips noticeably more comfortable than many flatter handheld-PC designs.
Wi-Fi 6E
The ROG Xbox Ally X supports tri-band Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.4.
Wi-Fi 6E adds access to the 6GHz band with a compatible router, useful for:
- Large game downloads
- Cloud gaming
- Remote Play
- Online multiplayer
USB4 Connectivity
Connectivity is excellent for a handheld.
You get:
- USB4 Type-C
- USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C
- DisplayPort support
- USB Power Delivery
- UHS-II microSD
- 3.5mm headset jack
The USB4 port is Thunderbolt 4 compatible and can be used for external displays, docks and other high-speed accessories.
Audio
The Ally X uses a dual-speaker system with:
Dolby Atmos
Smart Amp technology
Hi-Res headphone certification
AI noise cancellation
Built-in microphone array
ROG Xbox Ally X vs Steam Deck OLED
| Feature | Xbox Ally X | Steam Deck OLED |
|---|---|---|
| Display | 7″ IPS | 7.4″ OLED |
| Resolution | 1080p | 800p |
| Refresh Rate | 120Hz | 90Hz |
| Processor | Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme | Custom AMD APU |
| RAM | 24GB | 16GB |
| Storage | 1TB | 512GB / 1TB |
| Battery | 80Wh | 50Wh |
| OS | Windows 11 | SteamOS |
| Game Stores | Many | Steam-focused |
The Steam Deck OLED has the superior OLED display and simpler SteamOS experience, while the Ally X offers significantly more powerful hardware and broader Windows game compatibility.
Important 2026 Competition: Xbox Ally X20
There is now a newer ROG Xbox Ally X20.
The 2026 X20 keeps the Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme but upgrades the display to a 7.4-inch 120Hz OLED with Dolby Vision, 600-nit SDR brightness and up to 1,400-nit HDR brightness.
That makes the original Ally X’s IPS display its most obvious weakness in 2026.

Verdict
The ASUS ROG Xbox Ally X is a powerful premium Windows gaming handheld with excellent performance, a large battery and one of the most console-like Windows handheld interfaces.
Its biggest strengths are the Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme, 24GB RAM, 1TB SSD, 120Hz FreeSync screen, 80Wh battery and Xbox-style controls.
Its main weakness in 2026 is the IPS display. The newer Xbox Ally X20 now offers OLED HDR while retaining similarly powerful hardware.
If the original Ally X is available at a meaningful discount, however, it remains an excellent option for gamers who want Windows flexibility and strong handheld performance.
