Meta Quest 3S 128GB Review: Affordable Wireless VR and Mixed Reality
The Meta Quest 3S 128GB is an affordable standalone VR and mixed-reality headset offering Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 performance, full-color passthrough, 120Hz support and wireless gaming without requiring a PC or console.
It delivers much of the performance of the more expensive Quest 3 while using simpler display optics to keep the price lower.

Gaming Performance
Performance is one of the Quest 3S’s biggest strengths.
It uses the same Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 processor and 8GB RAM as the Quest 3, allowing it to run the same current-generation Quest 3 apps and games.
For gaming, this means strong standalone VR performance without needing:
- A PlayStation
- Xbox
- Gaming PC
- External sensors
120Hz Display
The Quest 3S supports refresh rates including 72Hz, 80Hz, 90Hz and 120Hz depending on the application.
Higher refresh rates can make motion feel smoother and more comfortable in supported VR games.
Display Quality
The biggest compromise versus Quest 3 is the display system.
Quest 3S uses:
1832 × 1920 pixels per eye
20 pixels per degree
96° horizontal field of view
90° vertical field of view
It also uses older-style Fresnel optics, while Quest 3 uses sharper pancake lenses.
Independent testing found the Quest 3S image noticeably less sharp toward the edges than Quest 3, although the center remains clear enough for gaming and general VR.
Mixed Reality
Quest 3S is not limited to traditional VR.
Its full-color stereoscopic passthrough cameras allow games and apps to place virtual objects inside your real environment.
This works well for:
- Mixed-reality games
- Fitness
- Entertainment
- Productivity
- Social VR
There is also a dedicated Action Button for quickly switching between immersive VR and passthrough mode.
Quest 3S vs Quest 3 Mixed Reality
Both headsets use full-color passthrough, but the premium Quest 3 also includes a dedicated depth sensor.
The Quest 3S does not.
That gives Quest 3 more sophisticated spatial sensing, although Quest 3S still supports modern mixed-reality experiences.
Touch Plus Controllers
Two Meta Quest Touch Plus controllers are included.
They feature:
- TruTouch haptics
- Motion tracking
- Analog sticks
- Triggers
- Grip buttons
Meta rates their AA batteries at roughly 30 hours.
The headset also supports controller-free hand tracking.
Wireless Standalone Gaming
Quest 3S runs games directly on the headset using Meta Horizon OS.
No external gaming hardware is required.
That makes it much easier to set up than traditional PC VR headsets.
PC VR Support
The Quest 3S can also work as a PC VR headset.
Meta supports:
Meta Quest Link cable
Meta Quest Air Link over Wi-Fi
With a capable gaming PC, this gives access to more demanding PC VR experiences in addition to standalone Quest games.
Wi-Fi 6E
Quest 3S supports Wi-Fi 6E, including compatible 6GHz wireless networks.
That is especially useful for:
- Large game downloads
- Wireless PC VR
- Streaming
- Multiplayer
A Wi-Fi 6E router is required to use the 6GHz band.
Battery Life
Meta rates Quest 3S at approximately 2.5 hours of battery life.
Battery runtime varies depending on:
- Game
- Refresh rate
- Passthrough use
- Screen brightness
- Wireless activity
This remains one of the headset’s biggest limitations.
128GB Storage
The base model includes 128GB of internal storage.
Available usable space is lower because the operating system and required software use part of the storage.
128GB is enough to start with, but users planning to install many large VR games may prefer the 256GB version.
Audio
Quest 3S includes built-in stereo speakers.
Unlike Quest 3, Meta’s current comparison specifications do not list a 3.5mm headphone jack on Quest 3S.
Wireless Bluetooth audio is possible in some scenarios, although latency can be an issue for VR gaming.
Quest 3S vs Quest 3
| Feature | Quest 3S | Quest 3 |
|---|---|---|
| Processor | XR2 Gen 2 | XR2 Gen 2 |
| RAM | 8GB | 8GB |
| Resolution / Eye | 1832×1920 | 2064×2208 |
| Max Refresh | 120Hz | 120Hz* |

| Horizontal FOV | 96° | 110° |
| Depth Sensor | No | Yes |
| Battery | ~2.5h | ~2h |

Quest 3 provides the superior visual experience, while Quest 3S delivers similar processing performance for less money.

Verdict
The Meta Quest 3S 128GB is an excellent entry point into modern VR and mixed reality.
Its biggest strength is that it delivers essentially the same XR2 Gen 2 processing platform and 8GB RAM as Quest 3, while costing less.
The biggest compromise is visual quality. Fresnel lenses, lower resolution and a narrower field of view make Quest 3 noticeably better for users who prioritize image clarity.
For first-time VR buyers who want wireless gaming, mixed reality and access to current Quest games without spending Quest 3 money, the Quest 3S 128GB offers a strong balance of performance and value.
