The Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 5 16-inch is a large-screen productivity laptop aimed at buyers who want significantly more performance than a basic budget notebook without paying for a dedicated gaming GPU or premium business branding.
The popular “Personal Laptop” configuration combines an AMD Ryzen 7 8845HS processor, 16GB of LPDDR5x memory, a 1TB SSD, Radeon 780M integrated graphics, and a 16-inch 1920 × 1200 display. Similar retailer configurations may differ slightly in storage, touchscreen support and Windows edition, so checking the exact SKU before buying is important.
The Ryzen 7 8845HS is the star of the package. It provides 8 cores, 16 threads, boost speeds up to 5.1GHz, Radeon 780M graphics and an integrated Ryzen AI NPU rated at up to 16 TOPS. Lenovo paired it with fast LPDDR5x-6400 memory in the IdeaPad Slim 5 16AHP9 platform.
That combination makes the Slim 5 especially attractive for students, office workers, programmers, WordPress users, heavy browser multitasking, moderate content creation and even some surprisingly capable casual gaming.

Lenovo supports both Ryzen 5 8645HS and Ryzen 7 8845HS processors in this generation, while the Ryzen 7 version receives the stronger Radeon 780M integrated GPU.
Design: A 16-Inch Laptop That Doesn’t Feel Huge
The IdeaPad Slim 5 offers a useful compromise between a desktop-replacement notebook and an ultraportable.
Lenovo lists plastic-body versions starting around 3.95 pounds, while fully metal models start around 4.01 pounds. Metal versions are approximately 0.67 inches thick, with plastic variants around 0.70 inches.
That is reasonably portable for a 16-inch laptop.
It is obviously larger than a 13- or 14-inch ultraportable, but the additional size gives you a much more comfortable screen for prolonged work.
LaptopMedia found the chassis solid overall, noting only minor flex when intentionally applying pressure around parts of the keyboard deck. The laptop can be configured with either an aluminum lid and plastic base or a full aluminum chassis.
The design is available in Cloud Grey and Abyss Blue, with narrow display bezels helping the machine look more modern than inexpensive 16-inch notebooks from only a few years ago.

The standard configuration uses a 16-inch 1920 × 1200 IPS display.
That resolution is often called WUXGA.
More importantly, it uses a 16:10 aspect ratio instead of the older 16:9 layout.
The taller aspect ratio is excellent for productivity because you can see more:

For a productivity laptop, that extra vertical space is more useful than it might sound.

The basic 45% NTSC panel is perfectly adequate for:

but it isn’t ideal for professional image editing.

For casual users, the standard display is fine.
For photographers and designers, check the exact panel specification before ordering.

300 Nits Is Adequate, Not Outstanding
All of Lenovo’s WUXGA IPS options are rated at 300 nits.
That is comfortable indoors.
At home, school or the office, brightness should rarely be a serious problem.
Outdoor use is another matter.
Premium laptops increasingly reach 400–500 nits or more, making them significantly easier to see near windows and outside.
The anti-glare treatment helps, but buyers who frequently work outdoors may want something brighter.
The OLED Upgrade Is Dramatically Better
Lenovo also produced a 2048 × 1280 OLED panel running at 120Hz, with 400-nit brightness and 100% DCI-P3 colour coverage.
LaptopMedia measured that OLED panel at around 403 nits and found full sRGB and DCI-P3 coverage, along with OLED’s effectively infinite contrast.
The difference is substantial.
Compared with the standard WUXGA screen, OLED gives you:

The Ryzen 7 8845HS is considerably more powerful than the low-wattage U-series processors commonly found in inexpensive productivity laptops.

The Ryzen 7 configuration uses AMD Radeon 780M integrated graphics rather than a dedicated GPU.
Radeon 780M is one of the more capable integrated graphics solutions from this hardware generation and provides substantially more gaming and creative potential than basic Intel UHD graphics.
LaptopMedia recorded a 3DMark Time Spy graphics score of 2,977 from the Ryzen 7 version.
That is nowhere near a modern GeForce RTX gaming laptop, but it is strong for an integrated GPU.

The IdeaPad Slim 5 isn’t marketed as a gaming notebook, yet the Radeon 780M makes lighter gaming genuinely practical.

For most consumers, that is sufficient.
But there is an important limitation.
RAM Cannot Be Upgraded
All system memory is soldered directly to the motherboard.
There are no SODIMM slots.

Buy 32GB → it stays 32GB.
LaptopMedia specifically identified soldered memory as one of the machine’s primary weaknesses.
For ordinary users, 16GB should remain sufficient for quite some time.
For developers, advanced content creators or users who plan to keep the machine for many years, 32GB is the better long-term configuration.

The popular “Personal Laptop” configuration is available with a 1TB SSD, while Lenovo officially supported 512GB and 1TB factory drives in the 16AHP9 platform.
1TB is a very comfortable amount of storage for a mainstream laptop.
It gives you room for:

- videos
- work documents
- programming projects
- several games
without constantly managing free space.
LaptopMedia’s tested 1TB configuration used a WD PC SN740 PCIe Gen 4 SSD and reported fast overall storage performance.
Only One SSD Slot
Unlike some Lenovo laptops with a second M.2 expansion slot, the IdeaPad Slim 5 16AHP9 provides only one M.2 2242 PCIe 4.0 slot.
The SSD itself can be replaced, but adding a second internal drive is not possible.
This makes the 1TB configuration more attractive than 512GB if the price difference is reasonable.

Cooling and Sustained Performance
A Ryzen 7 8845HS is a relatively powerful processor to install in a laptop less than 18mm thick.
LaptopMedia found that under short CPU loads, the processor ran at approximately 4.03GHz at 76°C. During a prolonged 10–15 minute stress test, it settled around 3.40GHz at 85°C.
That shows the trade-off involved in putting an HS-class processor into a thin productivity chassis.
Short and medium workloads are handled very well.
Long, sustained rendering loads eventually push the cooling system harder and reduce clock speed.
For normal use, this is unlikely to matter much.
For someone rendering video or 3D projects for hours every day, a thicker workstation or gaming laptop will sustain higher performance.
Fan Noise and Heat
LaptopMedia reported that the two cooling fans were audible but not excessively loud during sustained maximum CPU workloads. The laptop also offers an Ultra Quiet Mode through the BIOS.
The keyboard can become warm under prolonged heavy loads; LaptopMedia measured approximately 55°C around the WASD region during its stress testing.
That sounds high, but these measurements were taken under intentionally demanding sustained CPU loads rather than ordinary productivity.

All support Rapid Charge Boost, which Lenovo rates for approximately two hours of runtime from a 15-minute charge under its test conditions.
The exact battery capacity therefore matters considerably when comparing retailer listings.
Real-World Battery Life
LaptopMedia tested a 57Wh configuration and recorded approximately 9 hours and 16 minutes of video playback at its standardized settings.
Lenovo’s larger 76Wh option should naturally offer greater potential endurance than the tested 57Wh version, all else being equal. Lenovo officially lists the three battery capacities for the platform.
For maximum battery life, we would prioritize:
76Wh battery + WUXGA IPS display
rather than OLED.
OLED looks substantially better, but the simpler IPS panel is the more efficiency-focused choice.

Rapid Charge Boost
The ability to gain around two hours of Lenovo-rated runtime from approximately 15 minutes of charging can be surprisingly useful for students and commuters.
If you realize the battery is low just before leaving the house, even a short charging session can make the machine significantly more useful away from an outlet.
Depending on configuration and region, Lenovo supplied 65W or 100W USB-C power adapters.

Port quantity is one of the IdeaPad Slim 5’s strengths.

The Ryzen 7 model can support up to four displays total: the laptop’s own screen plus three external displays using HDMI and the two USB-C connections.
