Apple Watch Series 12 42mm Review: Smarter Health Tracking and 24-Hour Battery
The Apple Watch Series 12 42mm GPS is Apple’s latest mainstream smartwatch, combining a new S11 processor, redesigned Health Sensing System, Readiness score, Always-On OLED display and up to 24 hours of battery life.
The 42mm Space Grey aluminium model is particularly well suited to users who want a lighter, more compact Apple Watch without sacrificing the core health and fitness features of the larger 46mm version.

New S11 Chip
The Series 12 introduces Apple’s S11 chip.
It includes a 64-bit dual-core processor and 4-core Neural Engine, while storage remains a generous 64GB.
The S11 also powers Apple’s newer AI-assisted features, including Siri AI and upcoming Audio Intelligence functions.
For everyday use, performance feels fast and responsive across:
- Apps
- Workouts
- Messages
- Notifications
- Siri
- Health tracking
- Apple Pay
New Health Sensing System
Health tracking is the biggest Series 12 upgrade.
Apple redesigned the rear sensor system with more capable optical and electrical sensors and larger, more efficient LEDs.
The watch supports:
Heart rate tracking
ECG
Blood oxygen
Wrist temperature
HRV
Sleep tracking
Sleep apnea notifications
Cycle tracking
Availability of individual medical features can depend on country and regulatory approval.
Higher-Frequency Heart Rate Tracking
Series 12 dramatically increases background heart-rate measurement frequency.
Tom’s Guide reports that it can take a reading approximately every five seconds, roughly 60 times more frequently than Series 11 background tracking.
This gives Apple more data for:
- HRV analysis
- Workout recovery
- Readiness
- Daily health trends
The redesigned sensor system is one of the biggest reasons to consider Series 12 over an older Apple Watch.
Readiness Score
Apple finally adds a dedicated Readiness score.
It uses health and recovery data to help indicate whether your body may be ready for a harder workout or whether recovery could be more appropriate.
This puts Apple closer to recovery-focused features long offered by Garmin, Oura and other fitness platforms.
Recovery HRV
Series 12 also expands HRV-based recovery tracking.
Apple includes Recovery HRV and higher-frequency background HRV measurements within its health system.
For users who train regularly, this can make the Apple Watch more useful as a recovery tool rather than simply an activity tracker.
Always-On OLED Display
The 42mm model uses an Always-On Retina wide-angle OLED LTPO3 display.
It offers:
374 × 446 resolution
326 PPI
Up to 2,000 nits brightness
Down to 1 nit
1Hz minimum refresh rate
The ability to drop down to 1Hz helps reduce battery consumption while keeping the screen visible.
2,000-Nit Brightness
Peak brightness reaches 2,000 nits.
That is bright enough for good outdoor visibility in sunlight, although the Apple Watch Ultra 4 goes further with up to 3,000 nits.
For everyday use, however, 2,000 nits is already excellent.
Ceramic Shield 2
Aluminium Series 12 models replace the older Ion-X front glass with Ceramic Shield 2.
Apple claims it is 60% tougher than the Ion-X glass used on previous aluminium Apple Watches.
That is an important improvement for a watch that is likely to hit desks, doors and gym equipment.
24-Hour Battery
Apple rates Series 12 for:
Up to 24 Hours
of normal use.
Low Power Mode extends that to approximately:
38 Hours
Battery life is improved enough for a full day plus sleep tracking, but multi-day endurance remains one of Apple’s weaker areas compared with Garmin and some other smartwatch brands.
Fast Charging
Charging is much faster.
Apple says Series 12 can reach:
Up to 80% in around 30 minutes
and approximately:
12 hours of normal use from 15 minutes of charging
A quick five-minute charge can also provide enough power for up to 10 hours of sleep tracking.
Sleep Tracking
The watch supports:
- Sleep stages
- Sleep duration
- Sleep score
- Wrist temperature
- Respiratory rate
- Sleep apnea notifications
The longer battery and faster charging make overnight sleep tracking considerably easier.
Siri AI
With watchOS 27, Series 12 supports Apple’s newer Siri AI features.
The S11 processor and Neural Engine are designed to support more intelligent interactions and personal context directly from the wrist.
Some AI features can still depend on a compatible iPhone, software version and region.
Audio Intelligence
Apple is also introducing Audio Intelligence features including:
- Live Rewind
- Siri Recap
- Shazam
- Sound Recognition
Some of these features are rolling out after launch rather than being available immediately on day one.
Fitness Tracking
The Series 12 supports a huge range of workout metrics including:
- Heart Rate Zones
- Training Load
- VO2 max
- Running Power
- Cadence
- Stride Length
- Ground Contact Time
- Cycling Power Zones
- Swimming
- Hiking
- Multisport workouts
For most recreational athletes, the feature set is already extremely comprehensive.
GPS
The GPS-only Series 12 uses Precision L1 GPS with support for multiple satellite systems.
It is suitable for:
- Running
- Cycling
- Hiking
- Walking
- Outdoor workouts
The Apple Watch Ultra 4 has more advanced GPS hardware aimed at challenging environments, but Series 12 is sufficient for most users.
Water Resistance
Series 12 is rated:
WR50 water resistant
IP6X dust resistant
It can be used for pool and open-water swimming.
Apple also includes a depth gauge and water-temperature sensor for shallow-water activities down to 6 metres.
42mm Size
The 42mm aluminium GPS version weighs only:
32.2g
and measures:
42 × 37 × 9.7mm
It is a good choice for smaller wrists or users who prefer a lighter watch.
The larger 46mm model offers more screen area but weighs more.
Space Grey Aluminium
Space Grey returns as one of the aluminium finishes for Series 12.
Apple also offers aluminium versions in:
- Black
- Dark Bronze
- Light Gold
The Space Grey finish pairs especially well with darker bands such as Navy Blue.
Apple Watch Series 12 vs Series 11
| Feature | Series 12 | Series 11 |
|---|---|---|
| Processor | S11 | Older Chip |
| Health Sensor | New Generation | Previous Generation |
| Heart Rate Frequency | Much Higher | Lower |
| Readiness Score | Yes | More Limited |
| Audio Intelligence | Yes | No |
| Battery | 24 Hours | Similar |
| Display | 2,000 Nits | Similar |
| Ceramic Shield 2 | Yes | Ion-X on Aluminium |
The biggest Series 12 improvements are therefore in health tracking, recovery insights, processing and durability, rather than a dramatic exterior redesign.
Apple Watch Series 12 vs Ultra 4
| Feature | Series 12 | Ultra 4 |
|---|---|---|
| Case | 42 / 46mm | 49mm |
| Display Brightness | 2,000 Nits | 3,000 Nits |

Verdict
The Apple Watch Series 12 42mm is a major health-focused upgrade wrapped in a familiar Apple Watch design.
Its strongest improvements are the new Health Sensing System, much more frequent heart-rate tracking, Readiness score, S11 chip and Ceramic Shield 2.
The biggest weakness remains battery life. Apple’s 24-hour rating is good enough for daily use and sleep tracking, but it cannot compete with the multi-day endurance offered by some rivals or the 50-hour Apple Watch Ultra 4.
For iPhone users upgrading from an older Apple Watch, the Series 12 offers a strong combination of health tracking, fitness features, smart functionality and compact design.
