A16 Performance
The A16 chip includes:
5-core CPU
4-core GPU
16-core Neural Engine
For a budget-oriented tablet, performance is excellent.
The A16 easily handles:
- Safari
- YouTube
- Netflix
- Microsoft Office
- Google Docs
- Photo editing
- Video calls
- Mobile gaming
- Multitasking
Tom’s Guide found the A16 model noticeably faster than the previous entry-level iPad and capable of smooth everyday performance and gaming.
11-Inch Liquid Retina Display
The iPad features an 11-inch Liquid Retina IPS display with:
2360 × 1640 resolution
264 pixels per inch
True Tone
500-nit brightness
The screen is sharp and colorful enough for streaming, browsing, games and schoolwork.
The main limitation is that this remains a basic LCD display rather than the more advanced displays found on premium iPads.
Tom’s Guide also found outdoor visibility less impressive because of the relatively modest brightness.
128GB Base Storage
One of the biggest upgrades over older entry-level iPads is storage.
The base version now starts with:
128GB
instead of the 64GB capacity found on the previous generation.
Apple also offers 256GB and 512GB versions.
For most students and everyday users, 128GB is a much more practical starting point.
12MP Rear Camera
The rear camera is a 12MP Wide camera with an f/1.8 aperture.
It supports:
- Autofocus
- Smart HDR 4
- 5x digital zoom
- 4K video up to 60fps
- 1080p slow motion up to 240fps
It is more than good enough for scanning documents, casual photography and recording video.
12MP Center Stage Front Camera
The landscape-mounted front camera uses a 12MP sensor with Center Stage.
Center Stage automatically adjusts framing during compatible video calls to help keep you visible as you move.
The landscape position is particularly useful when using the iPad with a keyboard.
Wi-Fi 6
Wireless connectivity includes:
Wi-Fi 6 with 2×2 MIMO
Bluetooth 5.3
Wi-Fi 6 provides plenty of performance for:
- Streaming
- Cloud storage
- Gaming
- Video calls
- Large downloads
The main limitation is that newer premium devices have already moved to faster wireless standards.
Touch ID
Touch ID is integrated directly into the top button.
It can be used for:
- Unlocking the iPad
- App authentication
- App Store purchases
- Apple Pay authentication
There is no Face ID on this model.
Battery Life
Apple rates the Wi-Fi model for up to:
10 Hours
of web browsing or video playback.
The tablet uses a 28.93Wh battery.
Independent testing by Tom’s Guide reached approximately 11 hours and 25 minutes, making battery life one of the iPad’s strengths.
USB-C
Charging and accessories connect through USB-C.
The port supports:
- Charging
- DisplayPort
- External displays up to 4K/60Hz
- USB accessories
However, data transfer is limited to USB 2.0 speeds up to 480Mb/s.
That is noticeably slower than the faster USB connections available on premium iPads.
Apple Pencil Support
The iPad A16 supports:
Apple Pencil USB-C
Apple Pencil 1st Generation
However, it does not support Apple Pencil Pro.
That makes it good for casual notes and drawing, but serious artists may prefer an iPad Air or Pro.
Magic Keyboard Folio
The iPad A16 is compatible with Apple’s Magic Keyboard Folio.
It includes:
- Detachable keyboard
- Built-in trackpad
- 14-key function row
- Adjustable stand
This can turn the iPad into a useful lightweight productivity device, although the keyboard is sold separately.
No Apple Intelligence
One important limitation in 2026 is that the A16 iPad does not support Apple Intelligence.
Apple’s current compatibility list includes iPads with:
- M1 or newer Apple silicon
- iPad mini with A17 Pro
The A16 iPad is not included.
For basic tablet use this is not a major problem, but buyers interested in Apple’s newer AI features should consider an iPad Air instead.
iPad A16 vs iPad Air
| Feature | iPad A16 | iPad Air |
|---|---|---|
| Processor | A16 | M-Series |
| Display | 11″ Liquid Retina | 11″ / 13″ Liquid Retina |
| Storage | 128GB+ | 128GB+ |
| Apple Intelligence | No | Yes |
| Apple Pencil Pro | No | Yes |
| Magic Keyboard | Folio | Magic Keyboard |
| USB Speed | USB 2.0 | Faster |
| Price | Lower | Higher |
The regular iPad is better for value, while iPad Air makes more sense for demanding productivity, creative work and Apple Intelligence.
Gaming
The A16 is powerful enough for a wide range of App Store games.
It handles:
- Apple Arcade
- Minecraft
- Roblox
- Call of Duty Mobile
- Racing games
- Casual titles
The A16 provides plenty of performance for mainstream tablet gaming, though users looking for console-class performance should consider an M-series iPad.
Speakers
Apple includes landscape stereo speakers, which work particularly well when watching movies or playing games horizontally.
There is no traditional 3.5mm headphone jack, so wired headphones require USB-C or an adapter.

The Apple iPad A16 128GB is an excellent affordable tablet for students, families and everyday users.
Its strongest features are the fast A16 chip, 128GB starting storage, sharp 11-inch Liquid Retina display, excellent battery life and strong iPad app ecosystem.
The biggest compromises are the lack of Apple Intelligence, Apple Pencil Pro support and faster USB connectivity.
